On Friday, May 11, volunteers from Ford Motor Company
delivered Meals on Wheels across greater Houston. However, their efforts
extended beyond the Houston area – three hours north in Dallas, more Ford
volunteers were delivering Meals on Wheels. The volunteers admitted to some friendly competition between
themselves and the Dallas crew, but were united in their desire to make a
difference.
“Unlike some corporations, this isn’t mandatory. We chose to
be a part of this program,” said Kyle Smith, a relatively new Ford employee who
joined the volunteer team immediately after his hire.
Volunteering with Meals on Wheels not only gave the drivers
a day off but also opened the eyes of many of Ford’s employees.
Teams of volunteers completed one Meals on Wheels route and
delivered meals to more than 20 clients over the course of three hours. After the
end of their route, the teams swapped stories and felt “extremely fortunate” to
have been able to help local seniors.
“We weren’t their regular drivers, and they were still
thrilled to see us,” said Kyle. “I like feeling that I made a difference to someone.”
