Beatrice is an 82 year old senior who lives alone in West Houston. She moved to Texas six years ago from upstate New York to be closer to her two sons who moved to Houston. “I didn’t want to move in with my family, it’s just a personal choice,” she said. “I wanted to be independent.”
Her family helps when they can, but they aren’t able to visit each day to make sure that Beatrice has a nutritious meal every day.
“My daughter-in-law brings me groceries on the weekends,” she said. “But it’s too hard for me to cook a meal standing in the kitchen with my walker."
She learned about Meals on Wheels for Greater Houston about a year ago and started receiving a daily hot meal.
Beatrice loves her driver Vernice, who brings her meal and visits with her for a few minutes every day. When the family doesn’t come by, sometimes the driver is the only person Beatrice sees during the day.
“I used to eat just a bowl of cereal for dinner, but now I know that I will have at least one healthy, good meal each day. I really appreciate what you do and the meals I get. The meals help me and so many others.”
