Greetings!
I am writing this quick note to you from Brooklyn, NY, where I am spending a couple of days with my daughter's family and grandkids. We got to spend the fifth night of Hanukkah together amid lots of singing, dancing and hugs. I must admit being a Zayde (grandpa in Yiddish) is one of the best jobs in the world and I am truly blessed.
I wrote in my last Tuesday Memo about the many blessings that we have during this Holiday season. I received a number of emails but one stood out. The writer was not feeling very blessed this season and called out for a bit of help. The note reminded me how things can be very difficult for all too many at any given time, and that we should never assume that everyone feels blessed.
Too many people in our community and all over the country are hurting this year and it stands in stark relief against the joys of the season. It is important for those of us who are fortunate enough to be doing well to share our blessings with others. In return it is possible that someone who is feeling despair may be warmed by your act and feel blessed too. There are so many great organizations all over our city and region that can use your support - from the many wonderful local food pantries and neighborhood Community Assistance Ministries to the Houston Food Bank; the Salvation Army and the United Way; the Houston Chronicle's Goodfellows Campaign for kids; and so many, many more. Of course if you care about seniors and refugee families, you can consider IM. Everything you do will magnify your blessings this season.
Here are a few IM highlights:

Here are a few IM highlights:
- We are partnering with PBS for a screening of their new series "The Calling" on December 15, 2010 at Rice Cinema. The series focuses on young Americans who are called to a life of religious service. Following the video is an opportunity to hear from local young clergy about their lives and journey to become faith leaders. The event is from 7 to 9 p.m. and is free. More information can be found here.
- French Country Wines will be hosting a fundraiser for IM's Meals on Wheels For Greater Houston on December 11th in their store at 2433 Bartlett Street. For every one bottle of wine, they sell; they will donate a dollar to MOWGH.
- CenterPoint Energy and the Houston SPCA are both hosting holiday aniMeals on Wheels pet food drives this week. Dog or cat food (wet or dry) is needed to help feed pets of our Meals on Wheels for Greater Houston seniors. If you work downtown, it's easy to drop off the pet food at the CenterPoint Energy building, 1111 Louisiana on the 1st floor or outside of downtown at the Houston SPCA, 900 Portway Dr.
